My DVD player says it plays SVCD however it is telling me No Disk when the file was burnt as SVCD. ?????

I have a JVC XV-N312S and have been advised that I can upgrade the firmware for free. I am very computer illiterate and need help how to do this.

Why do you even bother with SVCD? It is an old format to record movies in a CD!!

In any case, there is should be no issue upgrading the firmware. I don't know the specifics, but usually you download an image file from the web site and you burn it to a CD. You insert the CD in the DVD player and it should recognize it as a firmware upgrade. Follow the instructions and you should be fine.
