I have never heard the term live scan so it must not be common.

I have been in several positions that required background checks, fingerprints and drug screen and I have never had to pay the employer for those costs.

If you really want this job, I would see if the cost can be reimbursed after you have been on the job for a certain amount of time..like after your probation period expires.

I have never been forced to pay for background checks or drug tests. I would be weary why a company is making you pay for these tests. If you did have to pay for it, you could write it off on your taxes as a business expense.

I would say it is definitely not common. But, I am sure there are companies that make you pay. It probably depends on how small the company is. I have never worked for really small companies.
