I've seen recommendations for pet owners who are allergic to take a sponge and use distilled water, wiping down the furniture to remove the allergens.

It works better on walls and wood furniture, but it can work on fabric as well. The sponge should be damp, not dripping, and you need to rinse it every few strokes in more distilled water.

I would get a lint roller and roll it on the couch, and try to vaccum the lose hair...

I am also allergic to cats and it helps for me.

use a lint roller and vaccuum it or get rid of the couch (did you know the previous owner had a cat? if so, why did you buy it?)
