I am thinking of joining and wanted to know how long and how many times I should plan on being deployed. I am going to try for DC for the U.S. Navy. I am not worried I just want to know what to expect so I can plan for my future. I am going to try to pursue being a fire fighter, any info on that......

Firefighting attracts many people because a high school education was usually sufficient, however a person with a two-year Fire Science Degree is often a large advantage. A person may also need to pass a civil service examination to get a job in this field, as well as a comprehensive physical exam.

After being in for 20 years (corpsman) I know that the DC rating is tough. Lots of hard work and long hours. When you go in now you are part of a ENG "group" or family, then you will be able to choose which rate you want (or the Navy needs). For Firefighting the rate is DC, but ANY engineering rate (or most rates on a ship) has some FF experience. The "DC men" are the experts though and usually train the crew.
Ships are different as far as how long they go out. "Gators" or ANPHIBS probably go out the most often. They carry Marines....but as a DC, you won;t have anything to do with them, you just take care of your ship.
As far as joining the reserve...it's not the once a weekend a month and 2 weeks out the year anymore. We are one service. You may get called up at anytime. Good luck with it. Best decision I ever made.

DCs are NOT firefighters in the conventional sense. there is a LOT more to being a DC than spraying water on pretty yellow flames.
Deployments will range from 4-15 months. You can be called on to deploy as part of your Reserve Unit or as an individual. You may or may not be deployed as a DC, you could end up getting security forces training
If you want the closest equivalent to civilian train, only the Air Force can give that to you. However, slots are EXTREMELY limited and it may not even be offered anytime soon. All the other Branches use civilians on their bases.

I did four years in the Navy as a Gunner's Mate. the amount of time you will be deployed will vary based on which type of ship you end up on. The shi[ you end up on is pretty much unpredictable. Hopefully you don't have kids or a family, you will spend a lot of time at sea. I was on a destroyer and I did one deployment over 4 years. I was lucky (depending if you want to go or not) most people go on at least two. You will be very very busy as a DC. It is hard work and it is hard to make rank, but if you accept it going in it will be much easier. When your not on deployment a lot of ship's typically go out mon-fri 3 weeks out of the month. Larger ships go out less frequently but for longer amounts of time. You should count on spending at least 9 of 12 months at sea. If it's better than that you'll be stoked, but remember there's always room for it to get worse. The Navy was fun though. Best of luck.

My son is just getting ready to start the Fire Fighter Academy. He got some fantastic counsel from our local community college. I don't know much about the Navy, but only can tell you how impress I was with all the benefits there are with the Fire Dept. Either way, congratulations for both honorable careers. Good Luck!

Why are you joining any branch of the military if you don't want to take the chance of getting called to active duty? Seeing as how we are going to be in A-stan until AT LEAST 2014, there is always a chance you will get activated.
