no. they are completely different styles and each have their own ways of doing things.

Go Kan Ryu is a Cross between
Goju - Ryu/Kai
& Shotokan/Kai.
However go with Shotokan.
Go Kan Ryu is a sell out. The instructors are not qualified.
The reason why I know this is because I was offered to become an instuctor twice at the age of 15 and 16 and a half.
I thought you had to be a black belt to train people, I left the second time I was offered.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let me say this..... I fully believe that the Okinawans did not teach some things to the Japanese. These things are for the most party very high level skills. They modified the stances a bit making them longer and deeper than those most commonly used in Okinawan styles. If the top Okinawan masters were pitted against the top masters in Japan, it still comes down to training, and luck. to say that Japanese Karate is inferior is to over inflate things. I have known many masters in both Japanese and Okinawan Karate. Again it comes down to the individuals, not the styles...... By the way, While I was in college (early 1970's), a friend brought a Japanese Foreign Exchange student home with him for Christmas. I met with them and we worked out. The Japanese was a first degree black belt in Shotokan. His was about 5' 1" tall. We sparred and he destroyed me, no matter what I did. At the time I was a brown belt and was considered by many of my peers to be good for a brown belt. I learned a lesson in humility that day.... Do not concern yourself with this is better than that. Even if it were true, it would still come down to you and how well you are trained. It is like buying a camera. My father was a photographer. He told me when I moved out something that I have never forgotten. He said when you finish college and get a good job you may want to buy a camera. Young people will often buy an expensive camera. Then they find that they still take lousy pictures. Having a better camera does not mean you will use it better. Your skills will always be the most important factor. Best of Luck with your training! ...

Dont know about gokan, but shotokan is known for its deep stances, not only to train but to fight in, so if you are doing another style where the stance is higher it will make it worse for you. I mean training in it is ok, but you dont want to confuse yourself when fighting
if your going to corss train, either, do it for fun and dont take the stance too seriusly, or do something with similar stance, or do something completely different like grapling instead of striking
If you like shotokan style of fighting then i wouldn't recomend TKD or arts like it because they keep their centre of gravity alot higher for all the kicks so it wont compliment eachother. i mean its fantastic to cross train but there are also reasons why systems are in place and you cant just take the BEST thing from each system and hope it will work, somethings are universal and will work from style to styl, other things will not

You could well do it. But I personally would suggest against training in them at the same time. Karate styles are primarily striking. And most of the time they are striking with the hands. So instead do something to compliment that, a more grappling art such as judo, even aikido. Or taekwondo which focuses more on strikes with the feet and legs.

The katas will be different so if you can remember the difference in the katas go for it. Best to train a different art such as karate and aikido, or karate and judo/jujitsu that way you learn different techniques and they wouldn't be so similar that you end up doing it wrong in the style you're supposed to be doing.
