I got a tattoo above my ankle four days ago. It's been feeling rather itchy and dry, and today when I was applying A&D I noticed several white cracks running through the tattoo. Is this normal? Are they permanent?

Yep its normal, everyone's tattoo heals differently too so dont worry.

I would stop the A&D and switch to an unscented lotion such as Lubriderm, Curel or Vasaline Intensive Care from here on out. Still keep washing it a few times a day but use the lotion in place of the A&D about 3-4 times a day. If it gets itchy dont scratch it, slap it! Yeah sounds weird but it works.
The cracks are from the tattoo healing but as I said stop the A&D!

You may be reacting to the A&D, some people have an allergic reaction to topical antibiotics, especially if it's over used. The other possibility is an allergic reaction to the pigment (especially if the color is red). I suggest you stop using antibiotic ointments gently wash the area with your finger tips & antibactieral soap, then apply a coat of vasaline. Keep the area clean & moist with vasaline for the next few weeks. Do not let the tatto dry out or scab or you may loose color out of the tattoo.

It sounds like your tattoo may be starting to develop a protective "peel" over it. Don't be too surprised if it starts flaking and peeling in a few days - this is COMPLETELY normal. Don't pick at it, and keep it moisturized.

It's semi-normal, and shouldn't be permanent. It's the skin repairing itself.

However, if your tat is done being scabbed, which it should be after four days, you should switch to a mild moisturizer, probably an anti-itch one.

sometimes skin peels on some people. Id say its normal.. after I had it.. my tattoo was great! don't itch it.. simply rub on our A&D and leave it alone.
