Let me try to simplfy it.
Different websites can use upwards of 10 different formats that are floating around out there some are good some are a joke.
Many of the playyers out there are the same some will play everything out there while others will only play 3 or 4.
Try this and make it your default player and I think you will be plesantly suprised.

Maybe a codec is missing? Check that the WMP setting says "automatically download codecs when needed."

Some companies like Apple or Realplayer do not license their codes to other companies. So for some videos you need Apple's Quicktime or Real's Rhapsody player. Some videos are in Adobe Flash format, but flash lauches the browser plugin.

A good site should say "click here for WMP" or "click here for Quicktime." And if you click and you don't have the player, it should auto-download. That's the right way to design websites that stream video.
