What is it called when you have like a microphone... then a speaker... and then that's it? And what's a good brand to buy from too? Sony, RCA..?

If the purpose is to increase the volume of a voice or instrument for performance, that is called a PA (public address) system.

Could it be a PA sysyem? (public address) Don't take advice on the make - try them out - everyones voice sounds different so get one that makes you sound the way to want to be heard.

It's called a "moniter" and there are many heavy duty ones available like JBL or Peavy.....;)

Yes, when I was a kid, we called it a "tape recorder". They don't sell them now...lol...
