Symptoms can vary depending on how depressed a person is, but they will be long lasting, not just a day here and there. Usually a person feels:
- sad
- loses interest in things they normally enjoy
- feel tired
- sleep more or have sleep disturbance where either can't fall asleep or stay asleep
- eat more or not hungry
- not feeling like socializing or bothering with anyone or doing anything
- headaches
- suicidal thoughts
Those are a lot of symptoms. I'm sure there are more, but these are common.

A great resource: www.nami.org. National Alliance for Mental Illness--they'll have an answer to every question you can possibly ask.
Depressed people show different symptoms, so I'll just tell you about mine.
I cry--every night
I spend a lot of time alone
I stay in bed under the covers with a book
I can't make myself bathe
I can't make myself go out of the house
I get bad headaches
I sleep a lot
I can't meet peoples' eyes or smile at babies
I can't read the Bible
I can't talk to church people on the phone
What I perceive to be other peoples' expectations become very real to me, and if I perceive I can't reach them, I'm very anxious and upset.
Lots of anxiety about everything
I can't take care of my hair and nails
I can't feed myself
I can't cook
I can't stand loud places--ultimate anxiety
I can't stand chaotic places--likewise.
Because I am medicated and doing the right things, I am not suffering all of these things at once. Most of them are under control.
Check with NAMI. They probably even have a test you can take.
Take care, feel better,
Debbie

some symptoms are you feel like you dont want to do anyting or talk or hang out with any of your friends, your always mad and may lash out at parents for no reason, you just shut yourself in your room and not come out for long periods of time, you arent as social as you used to be at school and in sports, maybe you write things in a journal and its very sad, you always feel like crying for no reason. and if you feelin this stuff but you dont know why its probley a big sign that your depressed. i was depressed and this is all the stuff i felt and did. but if you are depressed talk to you parents and get help because you can get better.
