No, the playstation 3 40GB is only $400, which in comparison with the xbox 360 or wii is not expensive at all. The PS3 comes with built in wifi, a built in blu ray player, and has free online. You have to buy wifi($100), an HD DVD drive ($200), and online capabilities ($50/year) separate for the xbox 360.

That's not even factoring in the high costs of manufacturing the other hardware of the ps3, including cell processor and RSX GPU, among other components.

Also, the games are on blu ray discs, and cost the same as xbox 360 games, $60, I don't know how that's expensive.

If you want to talk about a ripoff, you should be talking about the Wii and the 360, not the PS3. The PS3 is a steal even at 600 bucks when it was first released.

Let's start with the Wii. For every PS3 and 360 sold, Sony and MS loses money, but for every Wii sold, Nintendo makes a profit, so the Wii isn't really worth the 250 that you're paying for. And if you want to play DVD on your Wii, you'll have to wait until Nintendo releases the Wii with DVD, and it's not going to cost 250 bucks. It'll probably be in the 300 buck range. With the PS3 and 360, you're getting a bargain because Sony and MS loses money on every system sold. With the Wii, you're not getting a bargain.

Now to the 360. The Elite costs 450 bucks ,but what does it come with? A 120 gb hard drive and nothing else. For 50 bucks more, the PS3 gives you Wi-Fi out of the box, a Blu-ray player, flash drives, and free online play. For the 360, the HD-DVD add-on is 180 bucks, the MS Wi-Fi adapter is 100 bucks, a year's worth of online gaming is 50 bucks, and the 360 will never be able to have flash drives. So is the PS3 really that expensive? I don't think so.

Now to the games. The PS3 and 360 games are the same price: 59.99 for the average normal edition games, but PS3 games are on Blu-ray while 360 games are on DVD-9. Blu-ray disks are more expensive than DVD-9 disks. Then there's the content. Since Blu-ray can hold 25/50 gb while DVD-9 holds almost 9 gb, developers can put so much more info on the Blu-ray than they can on the DVD-9. Wii games are 49.99, 10 bucks less than the PS3 and 360 games, but look at what you're getting: 480p tops. Not even 720p/1080i. And then there's the content. Since the Wii is aimed toward the casual gamer, most of the games barely last that long, so you're paying 50 bucks for a short game, while you're paying 60 bucks for PS3/360 games that lasts a lot longer than Wii games. Is Carnival Games, Hannah Montana, Smarty Pants, Cooking Mama, Trauma Center, etc. worth 40 to 50 bucks? No.

No it's worth every penny and then some. We paid 599 for the 60gig way back when and don't regret it. We use it for everything. It gets used everyday and not only for gaming. It's a great all around entertainment center.

The price well just rent the games. As far as the price of the system , you get what you pay for. You pay for quality and reliability. You pay for a truely top of the line system

If the 360 is the next seventh generation video game system then the Ps3 would be considered a 9th or tenth gen system.

To buy the addons for the 360 just get it to do 80% of what the ps3 does out of the box would cost the 360 owner over $700 dollars before they even bought a game.

I bought the ps3 at 599 and am proud to shout it.

Imra V is SOO wrong. If anything is a rip off its Xbox. Even if PS3 wasn't a console, it would still be a great deal. Because the PS3 has blueray, built in wifi, hard drive the thing is gonna be expensive. As for games, they are the same price as 360 games.

ps3 IS not a ripoff. i'll tell you what rip off is, XBOX 360!!
you pay $350(premium) or $450(elite) for a system that is almost guaratee to break down after 3 months of use. you pay $400 or $500 for a system that is almost guaratee to last up to 10 YEARS!!! plus ps3 comes with MORE FEATURES out of the box. xbox comes with NOTHING. if you want to buy everything that ps3 has out of the box for xbox which will make it actaully cost over $700!!!!! now think again which system is the rip off

nicely no longer all psthree s are going to be six hundred dollars. there is one with much less stuff in it for $499. dont understand if this is going to drop that lots in value and if it does it probobly would be whilst x container 3 comes out. they seem to return down on fees whilst competion brings out a greater moderen version.
