I had to get a tetanus shot on Thursday and was just wondering how long my arm is going to hurt like it does. It's quite sore to the touch and still seems swollen. Thanks.

Usually it's tender for 2-3 days. Place a warm towel near the area you had the shot. Also, take some Tylenol or Motrin to help alleviate some of the pain. I hate those TD shots, I actually hate needles so any shot is scary to me.

The pH of the vaccine is fairly low, so just the acidity can make it burn. Beyond that, attenuated tetanus proteins result severe immune response, causing increased sensitivity to pain and achiness... kind of like the flu but right in the area of the shot. They pair the tetanus shot with diptheria proteins to make it more potent and longer lasting, which prompts even strong immune response. There can also be some soreness associated by injecting a lot of fluid into connective tissue, which causes some level of bruising and damage.

When I got my first tetanus shot the nurse distracted me and did it so quickly that I barely even felt it. The shot itself is relatively painless, but the injection site will swell up and be tender to the touch. Just don't go running into any walls or doorways and you'll be fine in a few days. I've had about 4 over the years, and each one has been like that.

Mine only lasted for a few days... I'm not really sure though, but I had to get a tetanus shot in the spring and it didn't last too long, I really don't remember now how long the pain lasted... But it hurts, doesn't it? I felt like I had been slugged really hard or something... haha hope the pain leaves soon! sorry I can't help more

When I got my tetanus shot, it lasted for like 4-6 days, and it hurt like h-e-double hockey sticks. For some, it lasts for a day. For others, it lasts for what seems like foreverrr. Just use that arm, work the muscle in it, and put ice on it if it hurts really bad.

2-3 days tops

the more you move that arm and get the circulation going in it, the shorter the duration of the soreness. If you are favoring that arm and not using it, you are causing yourself more problems because the medication just sits there in the muscle. Work that muscle, use the arm and the soreness will pass quickly.
