It's all averages -- some people have it early, some people have it late, and some people have it two years on the dot. Try not to worry about it.
The day I got my first period I was tired and cranky, and then it came, and I was freaked out. I didn't tell my mom -- I just cleaned up after myself, and used the napkins in the closet. When my sister squealed on me three months later, my mom's feelings were really hurt, and I always regret not getting up the courage to tell her.
It's really simple: just say, "Mom, my period came." If you don't want to talk about it, just say so, but let her know. If nothing else, you're going to run out of napkins at some point, and you'll want her to buy new ones. So say it just as soon as it happens.
I know it's hard, but it'll be harder later if you don't say anything.
Also, at your age, you should probably keep a napkin or two in a safe place at school, in case it starts. Or, just go to the school nurse if you notice some bleeding in your panties. You can fold up some toliet paper to keep your panties dry until you see the school nurse.
Good luck! It happens to all of us girls, and it's just another step to adulthood.

Okay, this is going to be awkward. Do you see hair in your underarms or in other places that I can't name? You should also see your face breaking out occasionally. You will notice you will be getting more hips, and will look less like a child. If you want to know when you get your you know what, look for discharge on your underwear. That should be a sign you're getting it soon.
Don't worry too much about telling your mom. Remember, she went through it too! If you feel more comfortable with writing than talking, leave her a note in her cell phone or something asking her to pick you up some sanitary supplies.
Good luck!
