Hello Chazza, having sold beds and other products for over 30 years i would strongly advise you to go to the best bed retailer in your area. A bed to suit one person may not neccessarilly suit another. I loved our waterbed and my husband hated it. I found it an absolute haven for someone with artheritis as i was sleeping on a constant temperature. My husband loathed it as he said he didn't know how many sheets/blankets or which duvet to use on his side. Selfish to the extreme! Now it's not a problem - he sleeps in another room where his constant snoring and assosciated tossing and turning are his problem and not mine, but he does miss the warmth of the bed! TOUGH! I do actually love him so think very carefully about this one. Toppers for a mattress are only just o.k. but do you understand thebed-bug implication between mattresses, toppers and waterbeds ? By the way - if your Doctor advises you to have a firm/very firm mattress for your back - leave the practice a.s.a.p. The best beds for a bad back areeither a waterbed from the british waterbed company or a mattress from a business selling a Tempur topper.

If they do it may only be for a little while. Back pains have nothing to do with the mattress, they are pinched muscles in your back. The other way of looking at this is even if a mattress helps for that 8 hours what about the other 16 that you aren't sleeping, what do you do about the pain then? The muscles are still as pinched so if there isn't pain it's likely to cause it. To get rid of the back pain you have to free up the muscles in the back and then you won't have to worry about what you sleep on and here's how to free them up: Back: (do from a sitting position) Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly press on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side. For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

Lots of people are under the impression that a firm matress is good for your back. A mattress needs to take on the shape of your body and not be too firm or too soft. I
f it's a case that you've just bought the mattress then it could just be a matter of getting used to it .
I've always found Pocket Sprung mattresses very comfy as they mould onto your shape with every movement. they can be expensive but theyre readily available in the UK.

If I had a pound etc. etc ... hard beds do not work for all bad backs. I hate the board under the mattress idea. If your mattress is comfortable and supportive why change it? If you wake up with spasm and pain then think of a change..... . If you can afford it try the free trail on Tempur-paedic type mattress, they are pretty good and give your money back if they don't help.

If you feel the mattress is too saggy then buy some chipboard and slide it under the mattress. Yes you can buy Toppers, I have them shipped here from UK or USA. However they are for comfort rather than firmness. I have Arthritis and Fibro so the mattress topper helps, by stopping my trigger points triggering.

I purchased a select comfort bed for this problem. I don't know if they sell it in the UK, but you can purchase them on the internet. They are not a spring mattress, but a type of air mattress, you can adjust the level of firmness.

When I was pregnant I got a body pillow. Sleeping on my side so the pillow went between my knees. If you want to try it, it helped a lot.
