I have a B.A. in Spanish and I'm trying to find a job in which I can utilize my language skills. I just saw an ad for a bilingual transcriptionist position. However, I was wondering what exactly medical transcriptionists do. Could someone with my educational background get a position like that?

Nine out of ten times doctors will record their findings (diagnosis, treatment plans etc) on a recording system by litterally talking into a microphone. All this will have to be put on file. That is where the transcriptionists come in. They listen to the doctors recordings and type up reports so it can be read by anyone directly involved in the care of the patient. And yes you can get a position like that. Usually they require good typing skills and also knowledge of medical terminology would help. Also there are educational programs that will get you certified in transcription within 3 months. PS I once had a transcriptionist job and I was my typing nor my medical knowledge was that great, so there is hope! Good luck

You'd need a course or two to make you familiar with medical terminology.

See http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos271.htm for info on medical transcriptionists.

yes but you have to learn medical terminology. Actually you could also be a professional interpreter in many places they are needed to translate between doctors and patients.
