Question to Christians who support a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage?

Would you also support a Constitutional amendment banning atheism?

Gay marriage goes against the Bible, yes. But atheism goes against it as well. It's pretty clear that the Christian God does not approve of worshipping no god, just like he doesn't approve of homosexual relationships.

So, would you support an amendment -- or, at least, some kind of law -- that makes it illegal for people to be an atheist in this country?

And if you wouldn't, but you support the gay marriage amendment: Why should one be allowed but not the other, if they both go against the Bible?

This is what I was trying to get at with my last question. Again, thanks in advance.

Let me clarify that I'm not a Christian and am in 100% support of gay marriage. Thanks all for your answers.

Well, first of all, atheism is a belief. How can I ban a belief? Homosexuals can believe they are right all they want, and they can even practice homosexuality all they want. I can't do anything about that. But, where it draws the line is Gays want to be married, which, marriage is of God, because He created it, and God says homosexuality is wrong, and doesn't acknowledge gays being married. That is the difference. They are trying to take something HOLY FROM GOD, AND MAKE AN UNHOLY UNION FROM IT. They want people to ACCEPT gay marriage as being ok. Well, I don't because God doesn't. And, even if they do marry, they are still not married in the EYES OF GOD. God's word is the same today as it was yesterday, and will be tomorrow. God's word does not change. That's why I am against gay marriage and will never support it.

Religion is a different issue than gay marriage - they cannot be lumped together.
We have to follow the intent of the Constitution... I an sure the Founders would not approve of gay marriage ( I am sure they could not have imagined it) - but they did believe in freedom of religious choice so we should not ban atheism.
God doesn't force religion or beliefs on us either.

I know of none who are trying to make it illegal to be homosexual.

But to recognize homosexual unions as a "marriage" has tax, legal, and other consequences.

The class that makes up a "marriage" is the hub of a traditional family.

I do not support any law that makes being either homosexual or atheistic illegal, but I also do not support giving the same legally protected classification to homosexual "unions" as is given to marriages!

No. Christianity comes from the heart. You cannot change another person's heart w a law.

Likewise, if you ban gay marriage, that does not mean that gay people will stop practicing homosexuality (in biblical times it was what you DID rather than what you are).

You can't force someone's heart to change.

Not by the govt. Marriage was adopted as a religious practice. If we want true separation of church & state, we can't marry anyone.

I think that it would be fair to have civil rights for all separately. A person of any sex could be considered an heir, gay or straight, & marriage would be held at whatever church you wanted before whatever god you do or don't believe in.

I would think an atheist would want to declare their relationship in front of friends & family with their spouse. That would be their "church".

I am gay but will not disrespect God by marrying a woman. That does not mean I can impose my choice on others.

I totally support an amendment against gay marriage. In fact I voted for the one we have in my state. As to atheism no I would not vote to make it illegal. We cannot force you to serve God and God did not say that claiming there is no god is a sin. What He said is one who says there is no God is a fool.

Psalm 14:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

EDIT: when2foldem - First. I do not hate homosexuals. To me it is no different than any other sin. Yes we teach against homosexuality because God says it is a sin. We try to convert all sinners to serve God. But we do not force them. I am not going to put a gun to your head and say convert or die. There is a difference between trying to get someone to be a Christian and forcing them to be one. If I did not answer what you are asking feel free to clarify.

I have a Fundie brother who is dead set against gay (same gender) marriage and I asked him if he thought there should be a constitutional amendment define marriage as being between one man and one woman. After I explained to him that the function of the constitution is to define how the government is run and to ensure (not deny) certain civil liberties I got him to admit that maybe there should not be such an amendment. But he then said, "but if they ever did make gay marriage legal then we should throw out the constitution and RUN THIS COUNTRY BY GOD'S LAW." Pretty scary as at the time young men were dying in Afghanistan overthrowing a government that was running their country by God's law.

Christian's beleiver's of YHWH, Christ Jesus, Holy Spirit; Atheism = Non Believer's; that falls under "Free Will".
Homosexual's fall under the laws of God Almighty and it is an "Abomination".
Leviticus 20:13 "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."

I can't seem to recall anything in the bible that says, "Thou shalt not have gay marriage."

In fact, the only thing that all you Christians whine about is the passage about a man lying with another man; it doesn't say anything about women, so lesbians are OK in god's eyes, apparently.

So if lesbos are OK and gay men aren't, doesn't that make God a hypocrite?

Oh, wait, I forgot- the bible is open to individual interpretation anyway, so passing an amendment would be incredibly stupid, wouldn't it? if you pass an amendment according to one bible passage, then murder needs to be legalized for anyone working on Sunday, according to Exodus 35:2, right?

Edge, if you say that you cannot force anyone to follow god...doesn't that ideal play into the disapproval of homosexuality? I mean, the Christian hatred for homosexuals is based on the idea that god said it's wrong, right? So, if you're trying to "convert" homosexuals, that's basically trying to get them to follow your god's word. Or am I missing something in that argument? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that.

If two Adults (over the age of 18) want to marry, why should religious busy bodies be able to tell them that they cant?.
