It depends what workout equipment you have. If you want to destroy your body but get muscle mass you could take steroids. If you want to gain muscle mass from lifting or working out then this is what you can do.
If you want to get muscle mass in your arms then do aboud 60-70 push-ups 3-4 times a day, lift weights whenever you can. If you're able to then just walk around your house with a dumbell all day lifting it.
If you want muscle mass in your calfs then do calf raises, start doing about 100 then work your way up to 500 then even 1000+. If you want overall body muscle mass then just work out whenever you get a chance join boxing or wrestling.
I hope I helped!

Heavy weights. Personally, I've had great results with weight that I can lift 10-12 times (the first time) It usually goes like this:
Dumbbell press: 80lbsX12 80lbsX12 80lbsX9 80lbsX7
Then I'll do 4 different exercises for each body part.
Chest days will be, flat bench, incline press, decline press, military press
Back days, pull downs, bent over rows, upright rows, bent over flys
Most people recommend 6-8 for mass building, but I personally like 10-12 better.
You get the idea. Aim for heavy weight and really try to push yourself.

Do 4 sets of reps of 6-10 for each muscle group. Make sure you are working hard for the last few reps. Eat a high protein diet.

You mean legally and safely ? Can't be done. What you see on TV and in magazines is bogus. It takes months to gain mass. And it's hard work. You need to be in shape before you even start. Free weights are best.

when trying to gain muscle mass, there are ways to gain fast contrary to what others may think. for example 10lbs of muscle have been put on in only 6 weeks keep in mind that the person had to pretty much live at the gym, workout 6 days a week, run a couple miles per day in the morning(for the lean quality), have a high protein diet, and use heavy weight.
i don't know if you can do this, and this took incredible amounts of dedication, but you can still gain considerable amounts in seemingly short amounts of time.
eating:
you should have as many grams of protein as equivalent to your body weight. second, many calories for fuel as well as carbs. usually a 45%-35%-20% ratio if you are skinny and are looking to gain mass. however if you arent as skinny as a stick cut down first of all on the calorie and carb intake. the 45 being carbs, the 35 is protein, and 20 is fat. protein will be crucial in the morning right when you wake up so be prepared for either eggs and/or a shake. and remember to have 20-40 grams of protein right before and immediately after your workout. and as far as meats go look for fish, skinless chicken breasts, and top sirloin, these are lean meats, look it up if you don't trust my answer.
protein vs. creatine:
when you select your protein, you want to make sure it's whey protein. this is because it has a high absorption rate to the muscle due to it's high amount of amino acid. creatine puts water into your muscles which they need to grow, but that's also the problem... water. you can step on the scale and be 15lbs heavier and look bigger but when you stop using it, that weight you'll see was mainly water weight. i know a guy, that used it and when he quit it his arms actually lost an inch of mass, he says it's like taking 2 steps forward and 1 step back(good summary). another close friend of mine pete took it to gain some muscle weight for MMA fighting. he gained 15lbs but when he stopped using creatine, lost every pound of it. i have a couple other stories but this is too long already, basically stick to your body weight in protein and you'll be doing good, because protein does support bone strength and a leaner body.
the workout:
OK, now to gain some mass you could hit the gym and do isolation exersices, example of this; for the bicept, the curl(dumbell and/or barbell). usually put on a heavy load, but not too much for you to handle if you are starting out. i used to do 4 sets of 15 reps for a workout, and that was quite affective, fast. usually you know you're doing good when you can get through a couple sets fine but on the third you start to slow down and the weight starts to get well... heavier. once you've acheived all 4 sets of 15 w/out stopping you can add 5-10lbs.
circuit training:
Ah, circuit training, something i have recently found to work wonders on strength, endurance and mass all in one. this is very affective as to everyone that has done it that i have come across. right now i am following the routine that is posted daily to tailor to a wide variety of people, it's called crossfit. i don't want to sound like i'm preaching it to you but it is something that i've found that has put the muscle on me faster than doing heavy weights in the gym like everyone else. when you do this circuit training keep in mind that you want to do heavy weight at a high repitition, to which you feel dead when you're done, but the results show faster and bigger. think of it this way, high weight for mass, and high reps for definition. also incorporate exercises that use your whole body instead of isolation movements. whole body exersices would include; clean & jerk, power cleans, and kipping pullups to name a few. also take a stop watch or use a clock on the wall to time yourself to make sure you do it in a time that is as fast as you can do it correctly, this will do to things; not keep you in the gym all day, and keep your heart rate up.
conclusion:
anyway, to wrap this up, you can do isolation movements, but remember heavy weight at 4 sets of 15 reps, or you can try circuit training if you're up for it. i don't want to sound like i'm plugging crossfit.com or anything but i would highly recommend you check it out, i'm saying that based on some friends that have tried it and myself, and have seen the quickest and best results of anything i've tried so far just from the workouts of the day. you could even try what i used to do... crossfit then heavy weightlifting, but remember usually go around 5 times a week if at all possible.
i hope this helped. have a nice day
