Nothing.
Most people mean manufacturing jobs when they talk about this. They have to understand that the golden age for 25 years or so after WWII was a unique time in American History. We had all this war industry we turned into consumer manufacturing, while other nation's industries were in ruins. We were the world's manufacturing center and low skilled mfr. jobs paid handsomely.
Now unless you are prepared to bomb the **** out of China, Japan, Mexico, etc. and reduce their industries to smoking ruins, that situation will not exist again. The simple fact is, there is a lot more of the world that can manufacture things, and their people are willing to do it for a whole hell of a lot cheaper. To stop American companies from sending those manufacturing jobs overseas is to condemn those companies to failure as the rest of the world will make and sell those goods far cheaper and drive the American companies out of business.
The goal of this country and our people should be to stop persuing manufacturing. It's a declining value sector as more and more countries compete in low skilled, low paying manufacturing. Instead we need to go after other high value jobs, like Finance, Health care, technology, etc. Knowledge is where the high paying jobs are and will be in the future. A service job is not necessarily a retail or burger flipping job, and many pay better then manufacturing.

1. US companies have exported the majority of the manufacturing industry...Steel, automobiles, even computers, to name a few things. This is profit over quality, employer over employee. Sad but true, there are several options a manufacturing company can choose nowadays. Either use cheap labor, make the procedure fully automated, or both.
2. What has been pounded into our heads since we all have gone to school. EDUCATION!!! Today's America is not the manufacturing power of old. As was stated above, finance, medicine, science, engineering, technology. These are the fields in which we must lead in now. In order to make it in this country you now need a 4yr degree. Otherwise most employers won't even look at you. And there are times when a 4yr is not enough by itself.
3. Education...why? Because it bears repeating.
4. As for trade laws, either way it was bound to happen, its a natural transition for growing nations. Manufacturing is a stepping stone for a nation to become economically stronger. The Golden Age of manufacturing in the US for the most part is over. Technology is the everyday tool of our lives, it is the new industry, a new Golden Age in which we need to take advantage of.
5. Times have been changing, question is are prepared for what is to come???

I look for American made, I ask for American made, if they don't have American made, I go elsewhere & believe it or not, I can & have found things made in this country! I drive an American car, no I don't get the best gas milage but, I combine trips, so it works out pretty well. I buy American made unless I absolutly cannot find it & it is something that I really need, like a furnace! I have been to Wal-Mart once & that was before Sam died, haven't been back since!

Like someone above, do away with NAFTA and all the other FTA's that are not fulfilling their promises to American workers would be a great start. Personally I do not shop at Walmart and other known offenders to the American workers.

I agree with geegee and 3dfarms, but there is one other thing that we can do, and that is get rid of the people who put these things in place in the first place, the people in Washington, the Republocrats need to go, and they need to go now because we don't have a lot of time left to fool around.

I think this may be one reason the housing market is down. Could be a lot of people are considering moving out of this country and just letting them have it.

Not much we can do. As consumers we have said that we want the cheapest price and that we dont care how the manufacturers do it. We've got what we asked for and its not made in America.
