Pain that gets worse as you mention through physical activity is generally of a mechanical nature. What could be the causes?
Ligament damage, capsule damage, facet damage, muscle damage....the list is endless. I would think pilates would more than likely make the pain worse. I disagree with the above post that 'most' problems are caused by the muscles which are 'holding up the spine'. Unfortunately the spine is not that simple.

For this sort of pain I would see somebody that isn't going to try and throw pain masking drugs at you. Try a Chiropractor or Osteopath. These two are both experts in the area. I would speak to them first and ask what they think about exercise such as pilates from then on. I feel a health practitioner like one of these may be 'slightly' more qualified that a pilates instructor.

Cleaning, exercising, walking sounds like posture problems. Therefore seek out a Pilate's Class and start the program. It is not cardiovascular exercise but slow progression of muscle control, by isolating muscle groups like the stomach, so they can help support the back. Back Braces will give you support, but will also allow the muscles to 'weaken'.
We all allow our tummy to bulge and go through this through out life and that is the major cause of back problems. Think about it, a Tent has a Pole and that is held upright by two guide ropes, slacken one rope and the pole will fall over. Your spine is the pole, muscles along the back and the front, allow those muscles to slacken and OUCH!

I would at least consider going to a chiropractor but one thing that might help you is trying to get a nice sturdy back brace that would help keep your back straight while you're cleaning or exercising. Some of the ones that I have seen kind of dig into your ribs a little bit when your posture is out of alignment and that reminds you to straighten up. I used to work at a job that required a lot of lifting and several people used theirs all the time and had good results with them. Good Luck
