My boyfriend's mom's friend, has been looking for a babysitter (she has recently fired her old babysitter because she would get home late and her daughters wouldn't be feed because the baby-sitter wouldn't cook).

I guess she works a lot and her husband is fighting in Iraq, and it would be a regular job (at least twice a week). The girls are 6 and 9. I was thinking about asking at least min. wage (here in Michigan $7 an hour, is that a fair price?

I babysit for at least 6 other families and have a lot of experience and references and I'm usually paid anywhere from $6-$10? Has anyone had experience where you are underpaid when babysitting, and how have you dealt with it? I really just want to be upfront about being paid with this job because I have been unpaid in the past (such as babysitting 6 kids for less then $4 an hour) but I also don't want to come off as being rude. By the way I'm a18 year old full-time college student.

Any Suggestions?

I would be expected to Cook for them, help with homework, but no cleaning of her house (besides the messes the kids and I make).

And Yes, I also hate the conflict of it, thats why I'm hoping to avoid it in the first place but I have a feeling the family doesn't make a great deal of money, so I don't want to ask for an outrageous amount either. Thats why it's confusing because all my other friends have "real" jobs (pizza places, fast food) so they have a set pay and don't have to deal with this.

Oh shoot, I also forgot to add this family lives quite a distance away from me. They live about 40 minutes away which adds at least an extra hour for travel time, and not to mention gas prices.

I think $7 is reasonable, I think that with your age and experience you could ask for more. Depending on the hours, I think $10 is really reasonable. I have a 5 month old and I would pay $10 for a good sitter. Ask her what she thinks is a reasonable charge. Maybe she is thinking more or at least that opens the door to negotiate.

As for dealing with being underpaid? I don't like conflict so I would probably just tell them I was busy all the time until they stop asking, coward, I know.

There is nothing wrong for asking for at least minimum wage. A lot depends on how much you would be asked to do. Are you expected to cook them dinner? Do you need to help them with their homework? At least the girls are old enough to be out of diapers and able to get themselves ready for bed etc.
My daughter had a few bad experiences where she was shorted on pay or had a hard time collecting. The parents came home and were conveniently out of cash. Even though she was upfront about the price per hour and that she was supposed to be paid that evening, it still happened more tan once. However, she refused to work for them again and spread the word about the family and they played heck trying to find others to babysit.

well it is definitally a good idea to agree on pricing before this whole thing gets started because once it does then the time has passed. however, $7 an hour may be a bit much only because of the childrens ages. the 9 year old can funtion on her own. she can get a snack by herself, she can get ready for bed by herself, she can do her homework by herself. the 6 year old for the most part, will be the same way. she may need help getting herself a snack or doing writing homework but for the great deal of it, your involvement in their schedule will be minimal...you're just sort of there to oversee that things get done in a timely manner. i think a more reasonable wage would be 5 or 6 dollars an hour. but i definitally agree that that should be discussed beforehand!

you do not might want to pay taxes on earnings below a particular volume. through the indisputable fact that's a church, i'd take the $50, and print up some organization playing cards accessible out to the mummy and dad at the same time as they arrive to %. up their childrens for destiny organization. As for the associates of your mum and dad i'd charge $8 an hour for both childrens.
