I noticed the other day that my 11 year-old neutered male cat's belly (lower abdomen) was almost completely bald. I know over-grooming is one the most common causes but he is a bit overweight so grooming that area is difficult for him. This skin is healthy and pink with no sores and he doesn't get upset or flinch when I touch him there. He has no other areas of hair loss and the rest of his coat looks healthy. Also, I treat all my cats with Advantage for fleas. Any ideas?

It could be food allergies, stress, any number of things. This is not a great place for medical advice. It could be a reaction to the flea medication too. My vet will only give me a years supply of Revolution (similar treatment but also protects against heartworms ticks, and other nasties) and then he requires an office visit.

Your best bet is to spend the $30-$40 for a visit to the vet for an evaluation. As cats get older, especially at the age of 11 years, they should have a wellness exam every 6 months instead of the yearly.

Good luck.

It could be a number of things. Seeing that he is 11 years old, he could be suffering from a thyroid problem or he may simply have ringworm. In cats, ringworm isn't always itchy and doesn't always show typical red patches. You should take your cat to your vet for a thorough examination. They are the best ones to diagnose the problem.

Could well be hormonal, this causes hair loss and overweight. Get him checked out. Does he actually eat a lot? What kind of food?
