I recently saw in a local newspaper that we would do much better without an Air Force. What do you think of this suggestion?

Here's a discussion in the Air Force Times that outlines both sides of the story.

RE: the comment that there's no air war right now... that's BECAUSE we have a strong Air Force. Bottom line, no one is stupid enough to try to take us on head-to-head in the air.

Please do not take that as a start to a "which service is better" debate. IMHO, we need all 4 military branches, as each has its proper place and does its job VERY WELL!!!

The USAF deserves a reputation as one of the strongest air arms we've ever had. General Billy Mitchell longed for the US to have an air force independent of the army and navy, and in 1947 his wish came true when the US Army Air Force separated itself from the US Army to become the USAF

The author clearly doesn't know much about what the Air Force does. Having the Navy or Army take over roles and duties that they don't have any experience or training to do is not very likely to make America safer.

I haven't read the article you are talking about but the Air Force is important. It is about more than fighter planes. There are surveillance, cargo and weather planes also. The Air Force is supporting most of the missions around the world with communications, radar and equipment.

stupd.

i would take it that whoever wrote the article is thinking that the USAF should go back to being a subservient part of the army like they used to be. that idea is a stinker because the army will naturally concentrate on the ground fighting and deprive the air force of critical funding, promote the groundpounder doctrine over air offense/defense doctrine, and generally screw everything up.

Each aircraft is built with a specific mission in mind. Considering the technological advances from the 70s with the F15 to the 90s and the F22 is amazing. I would have to sat that the best plane would be the right one,in the right place, with the ability to accomplish the mission and return safely.

Our air power is criticle and the Air Force is very important. Whomever wrote that in the newspaper must be an anti-wat liberal nut.

The Air Force is important, but we are not having war in the sky at the moment.

During my time with NATO I've probably seen
most if not all air services with more than 5 planes.
The USAF is one of the finest and I'm not easily
saying such things. I'm curious what newspaper
said that. They must have some kind of argument
to back that up with.

I'm a proud member of the USAF. And if the person who wrote that article truly believes our country doesn't need us then maybe he should live somewhere where he doesn't have people like us willing to give up our lives so he can have the freedom to even publish his opinions.
