I passed a church today which had separate services for modern and contemporary church services.

What is the difference?

They are probably just playing with words.

Their "modern" one is probably just traditional but updated, or maybe blended, meaning that they have some traditional order of service but with some modern music or modern liturgy being used.

The contemporary one probably means that the order of service isn't set, but changes week-to-week, and all the music is new, with a band.

Within Christian churches right now, there is a real effort going on to define worship styles, and it is difficult because so many elements of worship overlap and are used in all styles of services. For instance, Communion. Communion is a traditional worship element, but still being used in contemporary services. What is different though, might be the prayers leading up to Communion.

You could just call that church or visit their website to see what the differences are.

I'll leave you a link about modern worship that might be interesting.

Modern: The songs are more upbeat more for younger ppl.
Contemporary: Older generation.

Personally ,I like the contemporary church service. That's coz I used to attend church with my grandparents.
