Hi mike,
Most of the Receivers in that price range are pretty similar. They are cramming more and more circuitry into a single box its a wonder they work at all. 30 years ago when we just had 2 channel stereo,a Marantz Receiver would cost about $2,000,but the sound quality was amazing.Receivers today are only for surround sound systems, where sound quality is less important. A Receiver is already compromised by the use of a single power supply to power the preamp/processor section, the tuner section and 7 or more power amplifiers. The needs of the power amplifiers affect the preamp section which degrades the sound.Sad, but true.

Having said all that ,the only way for you to know if the Yamaha is a good Receiver (to your ears) is for you to listen to it with your favourite cds and dvds .There is no other way.

EDIT...Some enthusiasts say Yamaha has a "softer" sound which is good for music, while others ,like Onkyo, have a more "dynamic "sound which is good for movie soundtracks. I did use a Yamaha Stereo Preamplifier in my system ,until i upgraded. Hope this helps.
