By the way in which they speak, spell, write or come across verbally in conversation?
The reality is we all pass judgement on others(even though we aren't supposed to)hence calculating a period in time when an individual has stopped growing emotionally, mentally or scholastically often comes to mind in our personal and proffesional relations with others.
Do you agree on any level?

Generally, I think the answer to your first question is yes, we can guess the level of one's formal education. But for one to assume that their guess is correct for any individual person would be foolhardy. Formal education is poorly if at all standardized. Many high school graduates do not have good communication skills. In addition, informal education and natural ability can often more than make up for any lack of formalized learning.

In reality, as you state, I too have passed judgement on a person's intellect. But I try to throw away those prejudices whenever I catch myself thinking them.

It's when your preformed belief is shattered by those 'lesser' intellects (totally kicking your butt in a game of mental skill or saying something of profound wisdom) that you realize that elitist attitudes are not needed in this world. What we need is a recognition of the dignity and intelligence in everyone of us. I'm convinced that even the least of us has moments of insight and wisdom that is worthy for everyone to learn from.

Sorry if this comes off preachy or over-the-top. But it is something I truly do believe.

Peace

You have misspelled professional. You have not used the possessive apostrophe in "one's formal education".

May I assume you are not educated (and would I be correct?).

I do agree that we all make ongoing judgments on a constant basis when it comes to personal and professional relations. There is no law against it and I disagree that it is wrong - it is human nature. It is our ability to make critical judgments about an individual or a group that can make the difference in survival or death.

Far too many young ladies misjudged Ted Bundy, wouldn't you agree?

I think is is possible to guess ones level of formal education but you could be wrong a lot of the time. I know total retards that graduated with college degrees that are immature and can't speak like an adult and I know people who just have a highschool diploma that speak properly are very intelligent and just didn't choose to go to college or school wasn't for them. People inevitably pass judgment on each other, I think it's just human nature maybe. People do it without even knowing.

I do believe that sometimes you can tell, but don't forget, some people are just well read, and not formally educated. So therefore you can't really tell a persons educational level.
There are people who are geniuses just by reading and grasping the truth about certain things. The level of education does not make a person smart, life does that.

For one, no one ever stops growing emotionally, mentally or scholastically in their entire life. It's an on going process. And yes, you can judge one's level of education by the way they speak, write, verbalize etc. Why would you consider that we aren't supposed to pass that judgment? It's easy enough to do so and not out of line. Presentation in life is three quarters the battle. If you wish to present yourself well and appropriately in all areas as opposed to talking, dressing and acting like a thug, who would you consider to handle your financial affairs? Who would you choose to have as your neighbor if you are an MBA or higher? Though I understand you aren't to judge a book by its cover, we do and we want to. I want the suit next door to me not the thug regardless of the education level. Appearances are everything. Education teaches you that. Well educated people know how to come across.

I do, you can tell alot by someone's writing, speaking, etc. Keep in mind though, we don't always use what true knowledge we have, sometimes people rebel and purposely use language they know is not appropreate. Just like writing on answers, I certainly wouldn't use these terms on an application of any kind.

I think while you can guess a person's formal education, there really is no formula that will guarantee that you're right.
