Buisquick is a good option, or finding a recipie made for shortening/butter will turn out better than substituting crisco for lard.
I don't like cooking with lard myself. Kind of grosses me out.

You may have had too much flour. Even though the recipe calls for unsifted flour, you still should fluff the flour up with a fork in the container before measuring it. Flour can become very compact. Be sure you don't push it down in the measuring cup but simply place it in the cup lightly. If it was too salty , that may have been the difference in using lard and Crisco. Check the Crisco can and see if it has salt added. Next time use unsalted butter to cut down on the salt.
Once you add the liquid, which is buttermilk in this case, you must work quickly because the liquid activates the leavening agent in the self-rising flour and the soda and you want to get them in the oven as soon after that as possible. Knead gently, not like you would dough for a loaf of bread.

Use the bisquick but instead of using regular milk, add buttermilk instead.
