At that time most fights were either 6 or 8 ounce gloves.
When heavy weights fought it looked like they were wearing bag gloves with no padding.

When you consider the size of their hands there was not much cushion.

I fought with 8 ounce gloves as a welterweight and it felt like you were getting hit with a brick.

They fought with 8 oz. gloves. They were smaller than most of the gloves used in pro boxing today, usually 10-12 oz.
There were also no artificial materials available then, so 8 oz. of padding back then was smaller than 8 oz of padding today.
