Once in a while (once or twice per year) my left leg hurts for a period of a few days to a week. The pain is sharp, is if it feels like somebody is pulling my leg hair and/or an animal/insect is biting me or stinging me. The pain occurs randomly throughout the day, but only when I'm walking. It never hurts when I'm sitting and have no pressure on my leg from standing.
Oddly enough, it the pain intensifies when I rub it. Generally rubbing an area that hurts will overload the nerves and dull the pain (like when I hit my elbow or stub my toe), but rubbing this particular spot actually intensifies the pain.
It's on the left outer leg, halfway between my ankle and nee. The painful area is about the size of a credit card. There is no rash or bite marks of any kind, it looks normal on the outside.
What do you suspect is the problem and what is the solution?

I'm only 23. It's not worth it to see a doctor because it's sharp pain that I rarely have. The doctor is probably going to say take it easy and offer me pain medication. I don't want to pay $100-300 for that.

This is not temperature based. It happened today, being inside. It also happened outside when it was very cold a few 3 years ago. It is not seasonal. I'm doing a lot more physically demanding work than in the past...but in the past when I wasn't doing physically demanding work, it acted up then.
