I would ask why you need a laptop for school other than status? If you have to, go for the stability of Mac Os X, plus it is actually a better status symbol if that is the reason. As pointed out, Vista is new and WILL be troublesome for some time so if you must invest in a 13 year olds sex education (the most likely use of a laptop at that age) go for something a little more trusted.

Long horn is coming 2008 Beta is out right now..
As far as those say XP is Better then vista , Give vista a far years and a few service packs to catch up.
XP may be better right now But as Desktops get "A Lot" more powerful I am sure the benefits will whey out.
My PC is to crap to run Vista well so I use XP myself But I remember everyone saying 2000 & Xp were crap when they first came out..
also vista is extreamly stable
SO its to early to call it Wimpdows Shitester just yet

There has to be a REASON, to make something fundamentally different. Computer technology has matured some & the major breakthroughs are getting a little further apart.
So, why would they go to the trouble of creating an all new OS, when it would just do the same as Vista, XP, etc.
I think M$'s core business is going to change somewhat over the next 10 years.

Microsoft is working on a new version as I write. It's a business!
Just be glad Microsoft will sell XP until June 08, and will offer non-technical support until about 2010.

Actually Vista hasn't even been out for a year to the public. It was released January 31st 2007 to the public. So I doubt they will be doing a new OS anytime soon.

When you consider that Vista is a cut down version of the proposed Longhorn system, I would think, not that long.

It doesn't look likely it took them 7 years to make vista. And xp is still better.
