My Husband is thinking about buying a deer rifle. He's not sure of what rifle to buy. His main choices are a Ruger Mark 2 in stainless with synthetic stock .270 cal. New price is 444.44 He has seen a Browning A-bolt Stainless Stalker at a pawn shop in well used condition. Scratches on the barrel and ejector plate and needs a good cleaning. Also scratches on the stock from a strap for 475.00 .270 cal. Any thoughts. New or used maybe something he hasn't thought of. Prefer .270 or 30-06 or 7 mag.

As a Gunsmith and lifetime hunter myself I would recommend your husband buy the New Ruger MK2 instead of the Browning A-Bolt. The Browning is a decent Rifle but the Ruger is a much stronger action, and not overpriced despite Ruger's fine reputation. At $475.00 the Browning priced is on the "High" side, especially for it's condition and being in a Pawn Shop..270 caliber is the perfect Deer cartridge IMO. With 308 a very close second....

NOTE* Any gun you buy in a Pawn Shop has NO warranty or recourse if something goes wrong with the rifle after you purchase it. A New Ruger has a terrific warranty that will offer your husband peace of mind for the investment. Not to mention, I rarely get Ruger rifles in for Gunsmith work or repair issues..Can't make this same claim with Brownings though.Good Luck with what-ever he/you choose.

It's so close that it's down to personal preference. I never have cared for Brownings, mostly for aesthetic reasons. But even taking into account my bias, I'd still go with the Ruger 77. It's priced right, and you'll have a dealer to return to should the need arise, which is unlikely in the extreme.
The caliber choice is also a matter of personal preference. All those you listed are suitable for the same range of game. I personally like 7mm bullets better, but if it were me buying, I'd get blued steel, wood, and 280 Rem. caliber. To each his own.

I believe he would be happier with a Remington or Savage Brand in 30-06 caliber because it has a larger variety of bullet weights to choose from & when you have a 30-06 you don't need to buy another Rifle.* New or used real value & performance.*

No contest! Ruger every time. Accurate, reliable, good-looking, last forever, what more could you want?
