Currently I am a volunteer at my local hospital and I work in the surgery waiting room. I help the patients and families get ready for surgery. I have done a couple other jobs as well as there are many different departments in a Hospital that use volunteers. The best thing is that I get to meet people from all walks of life and I try to help them forget for a few minutes their problems and put a smile on their face. You must love people though to really enjoy it. Good luck, and God Bless You!!

At the hospital I volunteer at, almost everyone starts out being an escort, and can get other jobs once they get good at that or become old enough to do the other jobs.
As an escort you transport stable patients around the hospital, deliver labs, flowers, and mail, and help with any other small jobs that might need doing.
You are put into a dispatch room where there is a dispatcher answering phone calls from all around the hospital. They tell you where to go, what you will be doing, and sometimes additional information like a patients name or if you need a nurses assistance.
Then you just go and do the job, and return to the dispatch room.
It is a fun and hard job.
I hope that helps!

You would have to check at the particular hospital you wish to volunteer at, but most volunteers fill up the ice buckets and water pitchers; pass our the evening snack; work in the snack bar; work in the gift shop; take patients to X-ray or back to their room; and generally do whatever they are asked. A volunteer would never be asked to help with a patient or or to care for a patient, or enter a room where the patient is contagious. And, volunteers never do anything they are uncomfortable with.

They show them to the correct hallway to get to their destination.
Some help read to patients or walk them about.
Ive seen many volunteer's help at the front desk with questions/answers. Their is also a gift shop that is run by just volunteer's and some of the people make stuff to donate...its really nice to see the community coming together

There are many things that you can do when volunteering at a hospital. For instance our hospital has the following options, each hospital is different so you might want to check with them. Here is what you can do.

TLC volunteers: Greet, visit and escort patients into the center and serve as patient companions. Escort patients to different treatments and tests throughout the hospital.
Clerical volunteers: Provide a valuable service by filing, answering telephones, making copies and running errands.
Patient and Visitor Information: work side-by-side with visitor receptionists to provide directions, issue visitor passes and answer patient information telephones.
Visitor Information Desk: Staff the Visitor Information Desk in the hospital lobby and provide directions to patients and visitors.
Patient Discharge Service: Volunteers provide patient discharge and escort services Monday through Friday.
Waiting Room Liaisons: Volunteers serve as greeters and patient-to-staff liaisons in the Emergency Department and the Surgical Intensive Care waiting rooms.
Nursing Units: With staff supervision, comfort and assist patients and their families. You might talk to patients, fill water pitchers, run errands, and assist with clerical duties.
Childcare: Assist with the care and entertainment of infants, toddlers and preschoolers at the hospital's daycare center. Read, play games, supervise playground activity and help prepare snacks.
Gift Shop and Thrift Shop: work as a salesperson in the hospital gift or thrift shops, sponsored by Saint Raphael's Auxiliary.
Medical Records/Clinics/Admitting: File and provide other needed clerical tasks.
Clerical/Data Entry: Placements are available in a variety of departments and tasks include data entry, filing, copying, answering phones, running errands, etc.
Hope that explains it a bit for you. Your hospital may have different things. I would love to volunteer myself also.
