Right now, he's taking 90mil of Avinza a day and 8 15mil of regular morphine for "breakthrough" pain. (But he takes all 8 of them every day - I think his addiction tells him that he's having breakthrough pain even if he's not.) The problem is that my friend is (was) a recovering drug addict and alcoholic with over 20 years in AA. It's like the "old" Charlie is gone. He is now "sick" a lot, sedated to the point of slurring his words, forgetting stuff, and sometimes not being able to get out of bed. He also suffers from lots of anxiety and says he's "scared". Is this the morphine addiction? Those of you who know, is the amount he is taking a lot? Thanks for your input.

I am not sure what you mean by Degenerative Back Disease? DDD is Degenerative Disc Disease and is part of the aging process, where the discs between the vertebra dry out with age. Unless he had damaged a disc or too, this is not a painful problem. The other disease is Osteoporosis, or brittle bones, where the vertebra collapsed, can break, fracture. Their is treatment available for this.
If he is on Morphine he must be seeing a Doctor somewhere and I am surprised the Doctor has not picked up on his addiction. Likewise as a former Alcoholic, he might have returned to the alcohol. I would certainly take him to a Doc or to ER, as this might be something more serious like a Stroke, in disguise?

I suffer from severe chronic pain, and use prescribed medication. The amounts you list for morphine are unusually high, I think. Less than half that amount is usually prescibed for all but cancer plain.
