STOP!!! BEFORE YOU ANSWER CONSIDER THIS;
Mormans, J.W.s, Catholics and a slew of others like those of the James Town deaths.
Not to mention the leaders of the church I use to attend who insisted on a certain interpretation of the scriptures, and eventualy destroyed the whole body, which no longer exists.

I'm not sure where you're at ribucky, sound like you don't trust the Bible.
I do!
but there is a place in scripture, which says that at a certain time when Jerusalem was surrounded, and angel came to a couple men of israel. When they saw him they asked, " Are youb with us or with the enemy?" The angel answered, "No, I am a servant of God!"

Yes, if you rely on one man's interpretation of it, such as Jim Jones, or Fred Phelps, and don't use the common sense God gave you, sure: you can get worst than lost. You can separate yourself from God by worshiping the bible itself or your preacher's interpretation of it.

The Bible is a wonderful treasure of books that discern how God has acted through history to reveal himself to the world. The problem with following the Bible is that interpretation can be maddeningly difficult.
To take a not-so-simple example, consider John 3:5:
Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit."
Is the meaning obvious? Can a naive interpreter pick up John's gospel and know what Jesus is talking about? No.
To understand John, you need John's disciples, a.k.a., the Fathers of the Church. For example:
Tertullian (Baptism 12:1, A.D. 203).
"No one can attain salvation without baptism, especially in view of the declaration of the Lord, who says, ‘Unless a man shall be born of water, he shall not have life.'"
Biblical interpretation requires skilled readers who rely on contemporary primary sources to understand difficult passage. Too, it requires critical readers who understand that the words of the Son of God are authoritative, and that all the other Bible writers are subordinate to Jesus.
Cheers,
Bruce

If one learns the bible with the Grace of the Spirit of Truth (anointing received when born again) one finds truth that brings freedom.
The truth shall set you free.
As far as Mormons, Catholics, JW's, etc. go, they have additional doctrines that lead people astray. The additional doctrines magnify ones efforts in rituals & works to earn salvation. And then one is fallen from grace. Salvation is Grace & received through faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God. Not by works lest people boast (say I did this & that so I am saved. Pride).
So? It is best to get back to the basics. The Holy Bible to read with the Spirit of Truth, the anointing given who leads into all truth. 1Jn2:27.

You can certainly be following the Bible for the wrong reason and be lost. Ever heard of legalism? It is our motives which are on trial. Are we satisfied with the motives of our carnal nature? ...or, do we desire the motives of Jesus?
Legalism isn't strictly following the Bible. Legalism is following the Bible because you think that will save you. That is "...the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees..." (Matthew 5:19,20). Only Jesus can save you. Following the Bible comes as a result of being saved. Jesus even gave an example of this. In the following, this is Christians He is talking about and look what response He gives them:
"Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." Matthew 7:21-23

How can a person who reads the Bible still be wrong about so many things? ESPECIALLY Christendom's religious leaders who continue to spread lies about Jehovah God by saying such hurtful things about him... such as he allows our loved ones to die so he can have another angel.
Oh yeah... they're not talking about Jehovah God. Their God has no name.
Sorry if this sounds snippy. I'm one of Jehovah's Witnesses and it hurts my heart that so many people are still being lied to.
I just take solace in the fact that Jehovah is my God and he's forgiving and merciful and is still patiently waiting for people to find him.

i just read cheryl s. answer before i started to write this, and she is so right. take for instants the king of england in the 16th century. his name was james and he didn't like what the holy bible said because he had sinned against God and so he wrote his own. and today they call it the king james version of the bible and millions of protestants swear by it. religion is one of the very best tools of satan. think of all the people that have been killed in the name of God. the muslims believe God is on their side and so do the jews and so do the christians. so whose side is God on? faith is what God wants you to have, not religion.

Some people could be lost by following anything ( even the Holy Bible)
But there are people who follow themselves through following the Holy Bible or other teachings , and these people can't bee lost by following themselves.
