I'd start with making sure the furniture arrangement allows for easy conversations - ie sofas and chairs not all pushed far away from each other. If moving some pieces into a conversation area leaves space, you can use the empty space to put a chair as a separate reading spot, put a small table in to use as a desk or for display.
Then, as many of the others suggested, to make it cozy your are basically making it personal, and most probably casual. All of the things they mentioned like throws, accessories, pillows, artwork, etc can contribute to that. But don't go overboard and make it cluttered. Figure out the style of the pieces you already have, is there a colors scheme working in the room? If there isn't much color pick one that coordinates well or is part of a print/pattern/fabric already in the room and use it as an accent color for some of the objects you select and place around the room.
Just think it out a little ahead of time, chaos does not mean cozy and you can avoid cluttered chaos if you think it out a little.
Good luck.

Candles,,,candles always make things cozier. Get a bunch of different colors and scents, and light them up. You will feel good. Also, lava lamps are great. You can get them at target, and they make things very cozy too

Relaxing colors, a soft blanket, lots of pillows, a few plants and Yankee Candle Buttercream frosting candles do the trick for me.
But I constantly rearrange and redecorate, I'm weird like that.

For me its the personal touches, the photos on the wall, the book I'm reading on the coffee table, the nicnacs and the candlesticks on the bookshelf. The small things that say this is my life, in my place.

Personal pictures in frames, candles, other pictures on the walls, knick knacks (not too many though), houseplants or fresh flower arrangements.

Try burning Fruit-wood. Apple, when burned, gives off a wonderful aroma. Try scented candles: cinnamon, pumpkin, apple, and so on.

I'm only a preteen, but I actually am a good interior decorator. Don't laugh. They put me in the New
Yorker. In my room, I have a white shag rug, and a lot of knit blankets.

I have candles all around me house and I have dark couches with lighter pillows. It makes it more classic welcome home look. And it helps to keep up on the cleaning and clutter.
