What? Why would you want to do that? If you do not have anything to protect you, how do you think you will protect yourself?

You can ask to not be required to carry a weapon, but you are never required to be be unarmed. During the draft, a lot of conscientious objectors were medics and went into combat unarmed (by their own choice). Many of these patriots were highly decorated!

For many years, it was against the law for a medic to be armed.

No, if you are in an active theater of battle you must pack heat. You are a target just as the infantry or anybody else.

sad to say that, but the nowadays battlefields do not respect the red cross sign, and they do not respect enemy medics. make acompromise, have a weapon, but use it wisely.
