the only way you can have trouble with the law is if the debtor takes you to court and you get a judgment against you. if you then fail to pay you will be in contempt of court.

You won't go to jail, but the bills might lead to garnishing of your wages. Have you tried to apply for state aide? Most will back date your application 3 months to help pay back medical bills.
Also, try and work out a payment plan with the creditor. And last, ask them if they have a hardship charity, matching payment plan...
Good luck

This country is probably heading in that direction....but we're not there yet.

You cannot be sent to prison for debt. Without knowing specifics of the amount of debt, income and other factors, it's hard to give more specific advise.

If your income is low enough (and in particular if this debt is due to health issues with your child), do not hesitate to apply for state Medicaid programs. If illegal aliens are entitled to free medical care...so are you.

You can not go to jail over a civil matter. Owing a creditor money is NOT a criminal matter, so quit listening to collection agents who threaten to call the police on you. It will NEVER happen.

No, you won't go to jail. You can be sued for the amount though, and your assets taken if they get a court judgement.

They don't have debtors prison anymore so you can't be sent to jail for debt. They will follow and find you to pay back your debt.
