they can be very beneficial when used properly. periodic overfeeding can helps to keep leptin levels normal. it also helps to jump start the metabolic rate after an extended period of low calorie dieting. don't feel pressured into making it a weekly necessity. if you go can several weeks with out a cheat meal that's fine also.

I think a cheat day on a diet is a very smart thing as long as you have enough control over yourself that you do not go overboard. The cheat day can help you not feel so deprived and if you are not feeling deprived you are more likely to stick with the diet. Also a cheat day gives you something to work towards or look forward to.

The best way I have been able to have success on a diet is to allow myself a "cheat time" every week. The rule was that as long as I was really good all week, and didn't cheat at all, then I could eat anything I wanted, as much as I wanted, between 5:00-9:00pm on Saturdays. It worked for a couple of reasons. First, when I was going crazy craving something during the week, I would be able to keep control by saying to myself, "Fine, I'll just have this on Saturday night during my cheat time." Second, there really is only so much you can eat during that time. So if during the week, you promise yourself pizza, AND Chinese food, AND ice cream, AND steak, AND fried chicken, it's not as if you're really going to eat all that once Saturday night comes. You usually wind up eating maybe a couple of pieces of pizza and some ice cream, and then you're full and have satisfied your cravings. As long as you're really good during the week, this indulgence doesn't usually affect you much.
