I work part time in security in addition to my full time job.

Your biggest job is to observe and report. You want to make sure that you will be there when you are expected to. Unlike other jobs, they need to have a physical body at each assigned post, so if someone calls in, another person must stay until they are replaced.

The best security guards are tough but friendly. What I mean by that is when someone comes to your location. Stand, greet them, be friendly but maintain your ground. Don't argue with them but be firm but polite.

If I suspect something is unusual when I'm doing an inspection, I stand, ask them to show me what I'm questioning. I don't touch the items but I ask with a smile and always tell them thank you and mean it. I'm the shortest security guard in my job and I can get a person twice my size to do what I need them to do by maintaining a friendly but professional demeanor.

You will get more results if you are friendly and approachable, but always be professional.

Make sure that you can stay awake.
The job can be B O R I N G!!!!!! So, if you feel you are getting drowsy, make sure you stand up and move around.

Don't bow your head to read, or you will be accused of sleeping on the job.

Never abandon your post.

When you write up an incident report: remember who what when where and why. Don't use opinion, but document accurately (I document anything unusual or suspicious).

If you do these things, you will do well in security.

Oh and one more thing: most security positions are 24/7/365, so it's possible that you will be working Christmas and other holidays. So, you will need to ask what your company's policies are about days you will be assigned, including holidays, evenings, and weekends.

South Africa is more dangerous than Nigeria. Crime rate is high in the south part and low in the north. Avoid the River State. It's good if you know some trustworthy locals, but take this advice very seriously: DO NOT TRUST ANY NEW ACQUAINTANCES THAT YOU MEET ON YOUR TRIP After all, Lagos is the scam capital of the world, so be cautious. Things that you heared about Nigeria - corruption, scams, kidnappings, robberies - are true, and any Nigerian will confirm you that. But still robberies are not as common as in other parts of Africa. You might consider power shortages and that you should boil water. And sometimes there is scarsity of fuel. Many foreigners live in Nigerian cities, but the north is like 100 times safer than the south. Try Kaduna, Abuja, Kano...and stay out of Port Harcourt, and don't travel alone at night.

It doesn't pay much and is boring. Good job if you are in college so you can do homework at work. If you are applying to be a police officer it might look good on a resume. Security guards are usually elderly or not good with people so can't work in fast food.

Don't do it. Most jobs as security guards don't pay much and are a dead end. Find something that pays more so you can the better things in life.

If you want to bore yourself to death, go for it...
Why not be ambitious and go for an FBI/Secret Service/CIA job, since you're going into law enforcement?
