May I recommend some hotels I've stayed? Well to me the best area is close to Rockefeller and that is around 50th, to 54nd Street. I've been to The Michelangelo, The Blakely, Novotel and Sheraton (recommended in that order). Please check them in www.tripadvisor.com to me that's the best web site.

I'd say the Sherry Netherland Hotel on 60th And 5th Ave is the best location. After that, I'd say the Sheraton Manhattan Hotel at 51st & 7th Ave. If you can afford it, the Waldorf-Astoria is the best hotel, but these are comparable and run a bit less.

The UN is a bit of a security zone and isn't near any trains. Times Square is very busy and crowded. The above hotels are nearby, but in areas that are relatively better areas.

In midtown, near trains and all the attractions but not IN the attraction.

There are several different areas in Manhattan that are good places to stay. You need to decide your budget to determine just where you want to stay. Check out the Best Western on 38th street. It's only a few blocks from Times Square, and costs less than the W or Hilton and others inside the Square. If you stay up near central park and 5th avenue Lexington ave area are great safe area, but high price tag. Pretty much, you can walk to where you want to go , or just a few blocks to jump on subway train to get there.

I've used Priceline with amazing success and selected Midtown West, Midtown East and the Upper East side as my destinations. All of these neighborhoods are convenient to public transportation and the tourist attractions you'll probably want to hit.

Try TripAdvisor.com re hotels; they also have forums that may be helpful.

You probably want to be somewhere in the area of Times Square/Midtown. Wherever you stay, it's going to be pricey!
