No. All native animals in Australia are protected except in specific circumstances. You can hunt the introduced animals - pigs, goats, buffalo, donkeys, camels etc provided your guns are licensed and you have permission from the landowner. There is a kangaroo cull every year to keep numbers down in grazing areas. The people who shoot the kangaroos must have a licence to do so and an allocation of so many roos. They are also allowed to shoot only particular species.

Kangaroo meat is popular in Australia but most of it is used for pet food as the transport of carcases is not up to the correct hygeine standards for human consumption.

Since Europeans arrived, kangaroo numbers have increased considerably. Provision of permanent water and pasture has been good for kangaroos as well as sheep and cattle. There are more kangaroos now than there were 200 years ago. This does not apply to all species and some are threatened or endangered - which is why roo shooters have to be licensed. Farmers can get permission to reduce numbers on their farms but they usually have to get a licensed shooter to do it. Ordinary Australians are not permitted to shoot kangaroos.
