If it's a denim skirt or dress- sure.
Some people might think denim is too casual so take into consideration the area in which you live. What do people at your church wear?
**Edit
Thanks for the additional info. I understand your concerns more now. It's always hard being the new person.
If your denim skirt or dress is modest, and you have nothing dressier, go ahead and wear it. Because you're new, no one would hold it against you (at least they SHOULDN'T). But when you're there, make a mental note on what the other gals are wearing. But don't be overly concerned. You go to church to learn more about God not to impress people. Our attire should reflect the seriousness of the event- you are appraoching God after all. But you shouldn't go broke buying fancy dresses.
I wear a long black skirt and a tan sleeveless shirt most of the time, or a sweater. I wear sandals in the warmer months and dressy boots when it's colder.
Some people are offended by sleeveless shirts- if I'm around people I know who are bothered by it, I'll wear a thin sweater over it. I don't want to distract people but I also like being comfortable.
Another thing to remember is: Your skirt or dress is as short as your slit is high. Personally, I try to avoid slits entirely- it just makes life easier lol.

I think she should wear a skirt or dress. Denim is okay as long as it is not pants unless her top comes down below here bottom. Her top should not be low cut or tight either. The reason I am against pants is because it still shows the shape of a woman's behind. I think that this is distracting to men. Some people that are not believers that come to church dress worldly, but we need to accept them just right were they are and allow them to come in. We Christian women need to dress modestly and be an example.

A lot of it depends on the church you're attending. Some denominations can be quite convicting and judgemental. I'm a pastor of a non-denominational church and my opinion is dress comfortably, yet modestly--and don't allow yourself to be convicted by opinions or whispers. There are some that will condemn what you wear based on their own weaknesses, for example; a male minister, deacon or even higher leader has words regarding wear that's a little showy--it could be that person is dealing with his own flesh or a spirit of lust. No, when you become part of a church or ministry and the Spirit of God dwells within you, He will regulate you and your wear to what's right in not only the eyes of others, but also your eyes--the Holy Spirit will check you when you've gone too far--it's up to you to heed or reject His lead. Be blessed in Jesus.

We all have the freedom to wear what we want to. Men and women can wear everything under the sun they prefer too or even more to wear brassier and andy for women and brief only for men when walking along the street. But, in this case it's not good to say that we can wear what we want in church...because, we are going to church to pray and communicate with God--not to provoke anybody else. For women, you might say "I can wear anything without provoking anyone." Yes, you can do that. But, ask yourself how can you prevent others not to think different of what you are wearing...men can think so green and creates their own imagination if women so sexy pass their way. Now, if that will happen you can somehow divert other people's concentration in praying...that became's bad...
Generally, women should wear unprovocative dresses....I'm sorry Im a man I dont know what women's dress names...

I think it depends on the church. For example, I almost always wear jeans (even ripped jeans) to my church; that's pretty common at my church. However, when I go to church with my grandparents, I wear nicer pants or a skirt, because their church is a little more formal.
In any event, I agree that women should not wear anything revealing or otherwise immodest to church, because it draws people's attention away from God.

I agree with Donna F. Women should wear clothes. Anything else is just showing off. I haven't been a Churchgoer for 40 years. But you're there to commune, not for the fashion world.

Whatever she wears, it should be modest.
How is denim viewed in the local community? All the places I've been, denim is considered 'casual wear', not recommended for job interviews or formal events.

I'm an usher, and I've been nearly brainwashed by my parents, etc to think that people wearing denium to church is highly inappropriate since we're basically in front of God. We're supposed to dress as though we were meeting the king/president, but hardly anyone does, so w/e. As long as what they're/we're wearing isn't too revealing, dirty, etc. There are ways to make denium look ok/good.

God is looking at my HEART not my outward attire.I don't care what others wear,I don't go to church to check out everyone Else's looks.I go to get changed by God and get the goods and worship. If we are there busy judging what is appropriate we have missed the greatest thing of all Jesus in our midst.Shalom
