Some immigrants enjoy benefits right away when they arrive, some immigrants won't get anything until they work hard to become a citizen. The politicians are trying to get rid of those who are not entitled to benefits (i.e. non-EU) but whose entries are subjected to their control. But bear in mind that this group of people have no freedom of movement within the EU, they would not have been granted the right to stay if they don't have the skills the industries needed. Generally, according to the immigration law, this group of people will need to be working in a professional capacity for five years before they can apply for settlement, by then they would have contributed five years of tax to this country.

For those they have no control over (i.e. those with EU passports) who have the immediate right to claim benefits, perhaps it's time to revisit our open-door policy to them??

yes immigrants do go and meet up together. don't British immigrant workers in Nigeria all live together in the same areas of towns. don't they live in the same little ghetto's as some call them when its immigrants to Britain. when they go to Portugal and Spain are France and not bother to learn the language. immigration is not the problem its that less people seem from Britain to be immigrating out now. few qualified people seem to be willing to lift up there asses and go to other parts of the world for work far better to live off benefit and hope that they can get a good paid job in Britain even do most of the jobs they would be good at are heading for the cheaper areas for production. how many British born immigrants have returned in the last few years. a statistic that no one seems to take notice of. in the census's if its like Ireland where of the hundreds of thousands that immigrated in the eighties for work and how many have returned in the last seven years. almost half have done just that returned to Ireland due to the change in the economy.

They should be allowed in but should be self sufficient ie able to house, feed and be able to pay for medical care for the first year. Many countries only take in immigrants that have a trade and a proven bank blance before being allowed into the country. We should do the same here. Also Why do we continue to give single mums money for babies. Everyone should be granted one mistake after that if you want a baby you should not be given child allowances

Immigration bugs me on many levels, I mean in the news the government had miscounted 1.1 million immigrants who are sitting in our jails because its cheaper to keep them there than it is to pay for them to go home.Tax payers are picking up the bill there.
If they are here legally, then good luck and welcome, illegally, all I feel is pity because they have entered the country often through desperation and they have sold their soul to some leeching person who takes them for all they are worth.
The problem being is when they are here, they make the money for their poor families and send the money out of the country and I have heard that they can claim for their families who are not in the country and send the money back home, leaving the British tax payer to pick up the bill.
Or, an organisation will pay them peanuts to do a job undercutting someone else who should have the job as they are not illegally in this country. So immigrants do get a bad deal but so does the British taxpayer!!!!

Far, far too many immigrants are living here in the UK, illegally or not. The government has made almost no attempt at planning for the huge influx of immigrants and has no clue how many foreign nationals are in the country. It was 800,000, then 1.1 million and now allegedly 1.5 million. We need to start putting very strict controls on immigration immediately and only let in those who we really need. Basically there are too many people living in this country and we do not have the means to house everyone and provide education and health care for them all. We urgently need to start filling British jobs with British workers or the funding gap in areas with large immigration will really start having a large affect on everyones lives.

I agree with doctor who, people should know the difference between immigrants, the ones that came here to work hard without benefits and the ones who abuse the system.

The majority of people coming to the UK, come from either deprived, less developed countries or countries where their lives are being threatend by their own people and governments.

I consider myself a true Brit because I can allow some kind asylum for those in need. Also, if these human beings do come to 'our' country and work, it's not really stealing our jobs but contributing to society. If we don't allow them to work we shouldn't complain they are draining the system. Different cultures bring a richness to our fair isle and a uniqueness. Britain faces these challenges everyday and deals with them (mostly) in a respectable way and has done long before many other countries.

I was on housing list for 3 1/2 years before I got my old council flat. Albanian guy had been in this country a few months and got a flat below. And get this... they gave him a fridge, a bed, carpets and everything. I had a fold up camp bed at the time which was also my sofa. I was furious.

Immigration is a great think. The British culture and heritage is wrong and racist. I think a UK under Shia law would be a much better place to live in. One of my Labour Cronies is even trying to get rid of Christmas, you know we dont want to offend any of the poor minorities.

There seems to be the 'old chestnut' of zeniphobia. White is still best according to some morons. The right wing 'written press' always does the nasty in writing such drivel. The Mail & The Express are the main culprits. As I have said before on this site , Britain was born of so-called immigrants , to be still talking about it more than a thousand years on is really pathetic.
