Tying a knot so the threads stay together . thats by hand. not a sewing machine. sewing machine run back over a few a times that should secure the thread.

Make a knot in the end of the thread when you start. When you get to the end, make a backstitch ie go back to the place where the thread last went in and make another small stitch there. If you are sewing on the machine, go backwards for 1/4 inch.

If you're machine sewing, you do not have to do anything special to a seam that will be crossed by another seam.
If it is not going to be crossed (which will secure the first seam),
you need to either make a few very short stitches at the beginning and end of the seam or backtack, by sewing in reverse for a few stitches.

Easiest way to accomplish this (and often used in ready to wear sewing) is to simply hang on to the fabric and not let the feed dogs advance it at the beginning and end of the seam.

Do a back stitch... (sew in reverse to 'run over' the previously sewn thread)... this will lock in the stitch so it will not come out.
