The problem could be that the disc reading lens is dirty or the small rubber pad that the disc sits on is dusty and causes the disc to slip thus not getting to max speed so that the information is not being read efficiently and the PS2 assumes that there is no disc.

One of the problems with PS2 is that the vents get clogged with dust. Get a thin, soft bristled painting brush....not the decorating type the art type....and gently brush the dust out of the vents. DO NOT try to take the machine apart as you could damage the PS2. Buy a DVD machine cleaner. It is a disc that goes into the PS2 and will clean the laser. Make sure all the dust is off and out of the PS2 and clean it regularly. If it still doesn't work you have 2 options....1) if you haven't had your PS2 for long ie under a year, phone Sony and explain the problem. They will take your details, probably ask you for the Serial Number of your machine and will arrange for a new machine to be delivered to your house for free. You'll have to keep your handset though. or 2) if you've had your PS2 for over a year and you do not have Extra Cover Insurance you'll have to either pay for someone to take a look at it for you or scrap it completely and buy a new one. If you have to buy a new one make sure that you clean the vents and the laser at least once a month. We've had problems in the past with PS2's and Sony were always very helpful. Hope this has helped. Good Luck.

1). May be the lens is just dirty - in this case you'll need an especial spray for laser lenses and fragile electronics (liquid for really dirty parts oк pressurized air for not so dirty ones) - good electronic stores have those. Cleaning CDs and q-tips aren't good, plug off electricity before cleaning.
2). If you have your console for a long time and you play a lot - the lens is just dead - replace it in any electronic service - PS2 spare parts are cheap now.

Get yourself a lazer cleaning disc from somewhere - It should fix the problem.

Or if not, take the cover off and blow all the carp out of it then clean the lense with some alcohol and a cotton bud! (Don't do it if you're naff with electrics though - it could be a little shocking if you hit the wrong place!)

If I'm right, it's bad news. I had that problem years ago, and it's fairly common. There's nothing you can do besides replace it with a new one or get one from e-bay. If it's the old style then it's just ran its course and died. If it's a slim version then that's not as common and surprising to me.
