That would be the prophet Hosea. When God asked him to do that, it was to make a point. The prostitute wasn't worthy to be married to Hosea, and she wasn't faithful, but he took her in and loved her anyhow. It was symbolic of God's love for humans -- He sent His Son to take us in, and even though we're not terribly faithful, and not worthy of Him, he will always love us and be willing to take us back if we ask him to.

God told him to do it because that was the person he knew he needed as a wife and that he would do as he said and marry her. And turning her life around.
Which one it was I can't remember. But I do know about 10-15 years ago or so there was a guy that had just studied that and thought it was crazy and he would never even talk to a prostitute and about a year later he was feeding the homeless with his Sunday school class and there was a prostitute there that God told him that will be your wife. And sure enough they married.

God asked Hosea a preacher to marry Gomer.
But I'm not sure she was a prostitute,
she might have had many affairs.
He wanted their story to be a performance art
of how He felt about the way Israel,
His people were rejecting Him,
rather than thinking about Him.

Do you mean Gomer?
There is an analagous message in that book: The prostitute Gomer is representative of Isreal.
"The senses of Scripture"
CCC 115 - According to an ancient tradition, one can distinguish between two senses of Scripture: the literal and the spiritual, the latter being subdivided into the allegorical, moral, and anagogical senses. The profound concordance of the four senses guarantees all its richness to the living reading of Scripture in the Church.
CCC 116 - The literal sense is the meaning conveyed by the words of Scripture and discovered by exegesis, following the rules of sound interpretation: "All other senses of Sacred Scripture are based on the literal."
CCC 117 - The spiritual sense. Thanks to the unity of God's plan, not only the text of Scripture but also the realities and events about which it speaks can be signs.
1. The allegorical sense. We can acquire a more profound understanding of events by recognizing their significance in Christ; thus the crossing of the Red Sea is a sign or type of Christ's victory and also of Christian Baptism.
2. The moral sense. The events reported in Scripture ought to lead us to act justly. As St. Paul says, they were written "for our instruction."
3. The anagogical sense (Greek: anagoge, "leading"). We can view realities and events in terms of their eternal significance, leading us toward our true homeland: thus the Church on earth is a sign of the heavenly Jerusalem.

It was the prophet Hosea and the prostitute was Gomer.
It really is parallel to Christ marrying the Church after all we are like prostitutes going from God to God
Remember Gomer left Hosea and ended up on a slave auction block. Hosea went and outbid everybody to get her back
Isnt that what Christ did for us outbid the devil for us?

Yes, It was Hosea.
The Lord ask him to do it because the Jew nation was acting like this prostitute and they should see how the Lord was so merciful with them.
