I am new at this reality, of being 'deity free', and loving it!
I 'm more at peace than I have ever been in my life!
I wish someone had shown me the light sooner.
My question is, what in the hell does this mean?
"No atheists in fox holes!
I've seen this expression at least a dozen times! So could someone explain it to me?
Thanks

I know in my heart what I think! No one has the right to tell me whether or not I am an atheist, just because I used the wrong words to express myself!
I thought long, and hard before I chose to think the way I do now!
As you know, this in not a easy decision to make!
Just had to say that, cuz of one of the answers, I got!

It means that atheist soldiers on the battlefield will beg God for mercy when faced with death.

It is incredibly rude, considering that there are often "atheists in foxholes", and atheists that have died in them (Tillman, for example).

Our loss of concept in god comes from the inability of evidence for one in all those god. it extremely is comparable to lacking a concept in magic pixies by using loss of evidence for reported pixies. there is no solid reason to have faith in some thing devoid of any evidence, which comprise god. otherwise, human beings would have faith each little thing and something. And no, "each scientific regulation" hasn't been disproven. i'm no longer even constructive what you're conversing approximately right here. You seem to think of that because of the fact human beings have won extra understanding approximately such issues as gravity, quantum mechanics, evolution, and so on and have had to tweak or upload to present hypothesises that they seem to be a technique or the different "disproven". Atheists do no longer declare to have each and all the solutions. in fact, one in all our strengths is to repeatedly seek for the actuality. If a until eventually now held concept seems to be incorrect after careful scrutinty, a logical man or woman won't save believing in it. it is likewise the total element with regards to the scientific technique. and that i will remind you that it became the scientific community who challenged the Church whilst it got here to the character of the Universe, between different issues. bear in mind Galileo, case in point?

People who choose to adhere to an organised religion claim to believe that everyone in a life threatening situation will call upon a Deity at the moment of their (threatened) impending demise.

I am an Atheist but still use terms from my Catholic upbringing such as 'Dear God !!' although I don't believe in him/her (also known as a turn of phrase).

Do some of the answers mean that every time I might say "Oh, my god" that at that point I am a believer? I don't think so.
It would be a good thing if there were no cut and paste on answers and then we might be forgiven -get it?- the reams of bull droppings - you know Yahoo - that some people think are relevant and which are meet to be fed in chunks.

It's something that most Atheists who were once Christians face at some point in their lives. When faced with a problem with no other possible answer, you feel powerless and alone, and you begin to bargain with God. This is so likely with Atheists as they try and trade belief in God for a solution.

When my wife left me, though an Atheist, one night I prayed and told God that I would devote my entire life to serving him if he would just bring her back to me.

Needless to say, he didn't, .

What do you mean "Shown me the light?" Do you mean that someone "showed" you that there is no God? If so, he/she ripped you off. You can believe an argument stating that there is no God, but it does not lie in anyone's power to "show" this to you, any more than I can "show" you that there is a God.

Why did belief in a deity cause you to be not at peace? Perhaps the problem was more wrong beleifs/perceptions about him/her/it (whatever deity it was you believed in) than the actual deity him/her/itself. Why not just hold the question open for a bit?

This is a quote by LLoyd George who was Prime Minister during the First World War, refering to soldiers in the trenches waiting to go 'over the top'.

I think perhaps you're feeling the elation of being out from under the "religion" thumb and all the damnation, judgment, and all the other rules and criteria that goes with it.
Congrats.

No atheists in fox holes! Assuming that you understand what a foxhole is, (a dug out place in the dirt for military personnel to get into for protection when there is enemy gunfire) means that when things get really tough everybody prays to whatever version their God is. I think it's instinctual to want to reach out to something for help. (no offense to atheists)

Qualifier: I'm not an atheist.

The expression "there are no atheists in a fox hole" means that soldiers are praying that IF they get killed there will be a merciful God that will take them into Heaven. I have a different take on this: there are no atheists if a fox hole because atheists have learned to settle their differences peacefully and don't need to make war to get their point across.

BTW: to me "God" is the natural universe and is NATURAL, not supernatural. Even if the universe is from entirely natural causes, it is still a miracle that we are here and can talk about it.

Okay, here's the first thing you need to think about: WHY do you hold the beliefs you do? From the way you stated your question, you seem to suggest that you reject the existence of God for emotional reasons, not through evidence and logical investigation. This is the one main thing you need to be warned against. It's all very well that you're an atheist, but I don't want to see you as either an atheist or anything else if you have not arrived at your beliefs through proper rational thinking. Your emotions should NEVER be used as a basis for what you believe (and not only about the existence of God, but about everything else as well). To put it in a nice, quotable form, 'A theist who believes in God based one evidence is closer to the truth than an atheist who disbelives in God based on faith.' This is something everyone, regardless of their religion or lack of religion, should understand. I just want to make sure this is clear with you.

>My question is, what in the hell does this mean?
>"No atheists in fox holes!

This is an argument used by theists against atheism. A foxhole is a metaphor for resting sure about one's own beliefs. An atheist in a foxhole is then an atheist who truly believes that God does not exist. The claim that 'there are no atheists in foxholes' is saying that all atheists actually believe in God, deep down, but they're just in denial about this belief. The argument is most primarily used when speaking of teenage 'God-deniers' who are not true atheists, and of atheists under certain high-stress conditions and/or serving in the military.

It is, of course, a ridiculous argument. Its strength lies in the fact that there ARE many self-described 'atheists' (usually teenagers who have just 'converted' from theism) who call themselves atheists only because they have consciously decided to reject and ignore God without actually believing that God does not exist. However, at the same time, there are many atheists who, like me, have a proper understanding of their own belief that God does not exist and who are actually 'in foxholes'. The 'there are no atheists in foxholes' argument is thus not literally true and not an effective thing to say when arguing in favor of theism.
