Catnip has been found to induce sleep and calm people. There have also been studies to show that it helps the respiratory system. I found this site to be extremly helpful for your question.

Yes it does affect people. Not in the same way as cats. Cats react to catnip in many peculiar ways: some cats eat or lick it, others roll in it, some play with it and others will simply just sniff it.
For people has more calming properties. If taken before bed it will help you calm down and fall a sleep easier. For at least 2000 years, this mint herb has been used in medicines. In addition, it is also found in brewed tea to help humans with digestion and sleep.

No, it doesn't affect humans in the way it affects cats.
Some cats have a gene that makes them susceptible to its effects, and it seems to affect male cats more than females. If the cat doesn't have that gene s/he won't be affected by it. All 3 of my cats, including my female love the stuff. My male kitten goes crazy for it.
HOWEVER, catnip tea for humans has been used for centuries to treat stomache aches and produce a restful night's sleep. I'm not sure how well it works.

Get some catnip and take a whiff. Wait a little bit. Feel fuhnky> Probably not.. Catnip is named catnip because its most prominent effect is only seen on cats. Plus, mostly its the smell the cats love, and something in it that works especially well on cats. Now, if you want something that smells nice and minty, get some catnip, and put it in your potporie or whatnot, or just tear up some strips and smear them around. Dry catnip ismuch like jerky. Jerky is to meat, as dry crushed catnip is to the catnip PLANT.
I would hope it fdoesnt have much of an effect. Plus, cats are so small, anything that we eat/smell/use.. in the same amount it wouldnt do much to us. But because a cat is so small, it effects them far more than it would to us. Much like chocolate. A bar of chocolate barely harms us, but a bar of chocolate to a cat can kill it.

Catnip is used like camomile tea, it settles the stomach if you have a stomach ache, but that's about all it will do to humans.
I tried it once, it tastes like it smells, which I didn't like much, so I stick with ginger tea or camomile instead.
