I've been looking around for a seller of home defense shotguns for sometime, and I just can't seem to find a good one. I live in San Marcos, California, 92078 and the only store I've found yet is Duncan's Gunworks which sells their guns for pretty high prices. I'll purchase a used one if thats what it takes, but if there are cheap new ones then I'd love to find the place that sells them. Help?

NEF has a fairly poor reputation, although i havent personally fire one. It's really not a good idea to buy the cheapest gun out there. A .410 isnt a very popular home defense gun, I would stick to a 20 ga or a 12 ga. The 20 has much less recoil than a 12. ga, and you wont have to compromise on the quantity of pellets. A .410 2.5" load will hold around 5 pellets of 000 buckshot, which is about the diameter of a .38 bullet. Compare that to about 9 in a 20 ga. One only has to look at the size of the shell to see the difference. I would not use anything larger than #4 pellets for home defense, and buckshot (000, 00, 0 pronounced 'triple-aught') would be my first choice. The Mossberg and remington 870 are both good choices, as is the Stoeger coach gun (double barrel). All can be found used for about $200-$250, and new for about $300.

Try Big5, they aren't much of a firearms dealer, but they do have a couple of adequate choices for cheap. They have what they call the "Remington Security 8 shot" 12 gauge for $290 right now. (I'd call it a Remington 870 Express Synthetic 7 shot.) What did you want to pay?

Some places in CA will charge 10% or $75 for a transfer, that's what I was quoted in the Bay Area.

The advice that a 9mm Beretta is an "Italian Masterpiece" and your best bet for home defense is bogus. First off your current choice of a shotgun is far better, both more effective and less likely to injure your neighbors. Second the Berettas are over complex and poorly made, the lockup mechanism is complex and weakens the slide significantly and the one I own has machining marks on the slide. Very poor for the $750 model I own.

Both Remington and Mossberg make a home defense version of their popular shotguns. the Remington 870 Express, and the Mossbeg 500 are both respectable guns that im pretty sure can get in home defense versions. The 870 will probly cost $350 and the Mossberg, probly $300 or so. As for shops in your area, google it or break out the phone book. Walmart sells guns cheap if you can find a Walmart that will sell guns. They are trying to get out of the gun business, so good luck finding one.

If I were you I would stick with the mossberg 500, I've read of Mossbergs in US Gov't service at some marine barracks where they have run 10,000 rounds thru the gun.

The distinct sound of a pump action should preclude having to use 8 shots, if you think you going to need 8 shells in the magazine, I would consider moving

next if you ever decided to go deer hunting, changing the barrel over to a slug barrel is a snap....

Home defense, stick with a handgun. Especially in limited space or close quarter combat. I would go with a .45 or 9mm. I personally do not like .40s.

Is there a Bass Pro shop near you? Or a ***** sporting goods store?
The above answer about the beretta 9mm apparently can't read, this is a question about shotguns, not pistols. Please don;t get offended by this tho and strap on a bomb belt and blow up a school bus load of innocent israeli children.

Try this,
Go look around on Gunbroker.com for the shotgun you want at the price you're willing to pay.
Use Duncans Gunworks as your FFL receiving agent, you simply have Duncans submit a signed copy of their FFL to the seller, the seller upon receipt of your money and their FFL copy will mail the shotgun to them, Duncans will then contact you to come in and do your paperwork and FFL transfer, it will cost you maybe 20 to 30 bucks for transfer fee.
