I think it has some good parables...the Good Samaritan comes to mind, and I will be teaching that story to my children as an example of helping others regardless of who they are.

I'm a Christian and I don't believe everything that the bible says. There's a lot of things in the bible that are meant to be taken metaphorically. Fundamentalist Christians have used the bible to justify horrible things like slavery, racism and killing gay people and I think that is just terrible. Those are the type of people that give Christians a bad name.

The funny thing about the bible is that anyone can use it to their advantage. For example Gay and Lesbian's right's. One side can say "God loves all of his children, why would he exclude some people and not others." Another would say "Because God said we were put on this world to procreate." The bible is something that everyone interprets differently. It's amazing that the author can make it's readers so conflicted toward each other. He or She was a genius.

Christian:
One bad thing is
Matthew 5:39
But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Some people need a good slap just to put them back on track. It would be for their own good, but we may not strike them.
So, we rely on God's vengence:
Micah 5:15
I will take vengeance in anger and wrath upon the nations that have not obeyed me."

At its core, Jesus's statement that the greatest rules for living by are to love God (or, by extension, the universe, or whatever you consider to be the all-force, even if just a quantum field flux) and to love each other.
He may have failed the messianic prophecies miserably, but all the same, he had some pretty awesome ideas.

I'm a Christian, but some of the parts that can be used to justify misogyny and bigotry make me cringe. I think that's more the fault of the (mis)interpreters, but I do wish those had been handed down to us better.

some parts are hard to understand because it was a different time period so some words mean a different thing. also the gospels explain things a little different then each other because they were written for different types of people so that can get kind of confusing.

Sure. Sometimes, I like to read certain passages and get a good laugh. Genesis usually does the trick.

The Old Testament is mostly mythological, written hundreds of years after the purported events by unknown authors, so about half of it is not historical.
