Reliable as what?
History? No. It gets the order of kings wrong and describes impossible events as reality. Further, it makes historical claims that are directly denied by the evidence.
Science? No. It classes bats with birds and insists that rabbits chew a cud.
Mythology? Maybe. It is a collection of stories and myths that were cobbled together from previously existing myths and stories. The authorship of it, however, is questionable.

well it depends on what you are refering to as reliable. The old testament for example refers to the history, religious, spiritual, physical displacement, and subsequent rise and fall of empires that had a direct influence in thier development during a certain historical period. Every ancient race for example has a creation `myth` and subsequent tales of interaction with heavenly beings. These indeed have been assigned to the vaults of mythology because the can`t be proven or disproven but the tales are all very similar and there is much on theis subject too. As for the new testement, these to are chronicals of a time in history and there is many factual references contained within it but, it is more concerned with the message of christ and the meaning it has. How ever it is fair to say that since the discovery of the gnostic gospels there is some doubt regarding the presentation and indeed th interpretation of that message. This, I believe is the doing of the developing organised religious factions who have always through the annals of time have always and still do have an acrimoniuos relationship with the varying governing bodies. So then it is prudent to keep this in mind when researching the truth contained within any historical account. It is also wise to consult the gnostic gospels and the claims of heresay in order that the discerning indavidual can decide for themselves about the facts and the truth that lights the path on which they travel. There are no right or wrong answers, or is threre?

Well, it can reliably hold doors shut, though it doesn't open many. And it's good for pressing flowers. It's also a reliable source of stories revealing human folly, although there are others equally reliable, and more extensive, for that. As for the rest it's as reliable as most tomes written from a particular ethnic, regional, or religious viewpoint. Which isn't saying much. But at least the King James version reliably presents wonderful rhythms and images of language unrivaled in translations of other texts I've ever found. So perhaps more of the original verses in the original languages could be as beautiful as The Song of Solomon if only we could read them.

Are any fundamentalist aware of the fact the Bible was put together through a long historical process that involves early medieval Jews, the Catholic Church and reformers of the Protestant Church? Or is history just a theory, like evolution?
No book was ever zapped from the sky with a voice saying: This is it.
No book can absolve you from exercising your moral judgment.

It is reliable for hypocrites. Due to it's inbuilt self-contradictory nature. Anyone can get anything they want out of it.
