We just got our son a ball tent and it was the best investment I've made lately! It's a nylon, pop-up tent and came with 75 plastic, hollow balls. We bought a refill pack of 100 balls also. The boy spends hours a day in it, throwing the balls around, trying to bury himself underneath them and sometimes rolling the tent around the living room. Now, to warn, the balls do get thrown out and can become messy. I don't mind picking them up because he loves it so much, it's worth the price!

Stuffed toys are good for that age group. Things with bright colors that make noise like toy zylophone and the like. Educational toys that help develop skills like eye/hand coordination, or color/shape recognition.
Truthfully though, your child will probably get just as much fun playing with the wrapping paper after it is torn off of the gift as he will playing with the gift.

Honey I'd get him a lot of little books that you could read to him. Some people don't realize how much reading to children at a young age helps them later as they start to school and beyond.
